Dave was a member of Barrence Whitfield’s legendary band The Savages. In the 80’s and early 90’s Barrence Whitfield & The Savages were absolutely THE greatest live band and Dave was a huge part of their sound. Every performance was always over the top fun. I will never forget our great times together. We will all miss him as a musician and friend.

It was a really bad week for saxophonists as we also lost one of Jazz music’s most forward thinking composers & multi instrumentalists Sam Rivers at the ripe age of 88. Check out his incredible recordings on the Blue Note label.

Lloyd Knibb was one of the most powerful & influential drummers in all of music history, let alone Jamaican music. He ranks with the best, Rock’s Keith Moon, Funk’s Zigaboo Modeliste (The Meters) and Jazz’ Elvin Jones & Max Roach.

Lloyd Knibb was there at the inception of Jamaican Ska music in 1965 with the formation of The Skatalites. Although they only lasted a short time they influenced all the Jamaican music that followed. They reformed in the 80’s and toured the world. I had the opportunity to see them quite a few times and the honor of hanging out w/ them a number of times. They were incredibly gracious to all their fans and I have some great memories of my conversations w/ Mr Knibb. Luckily I had my final chance to see the man perform with The Skatalites in Ithaca in March as we drove through a snowstorm to get to see them.

So slap on a Skatalites record and wait for those driving Lloyd Knibb drum fills to kick in and make you jump up and dance the Ska!!

Stax Of Trax Records will be joining with the Music Underground for another Record Show on Saturday October 1st ( a non-football weekend). Stay tuned for more info. I also wanted to let you know that I’ve been stocking lots of great new vintage vinyl there recently so make sure you check us out at The Music Underground / Chronic Town 224 West College Ave.

Arts Festival is here again and Stax of Trax Records and Music...

Arts Festival is here again and Stax of Trax Records and Music Underground are joining forces for a THREE DAY RECORD SHOW MARATHON - Friday July 15th through Sunday July 17th at Chronic Town 224 West College Ave. State College. Tim overcame many obstacles in his life and recently received his PhD. in Black History from the University of Houston. He also just finished the definitive book on Houston Blues giant Lightnin’ Hopkins that will be published soon. Keep an eye on this website for updates as to when it will be published.

Tim was also a serious political and social activist, both locally and globally. He fought against sweatshop labor and helped to get Penn State to participate in Fair Trade practices. Tim was also seriously involved in the struggles of the Houston Black community as I was able to observe when I visited him this Fall. But there was always time for music and on that visit we made a trip to a funky little Gulf Coast bar to see Johnny Winter play a kick ass show of Texas & Louisiana Blues.

His drive & spirit will be sorely missed by all his musical and activist brothers. He is survived by his wife Kyongmi, daughter Yuna and brother Chris to whom we send all of our love and sympathy.

Hope your hangin’ with Po’ Lightnin’ right now my friend!

STAX of TRAX RECORD STORE DAY EVENTChronic Town and Music...

STAX of TRAX RECORD STORE DAY EVENT
Chronic Town and Music Underground host Stax of Trax for Record Day

Our future path is still a bit up in the air so I thought I’d let everyone know in case you’ve been procrastinating on purchasing something - Do it now!, as our inventory will be going into Winter hibernation for a while. Also I wanted to remind you to take advantage of our ongoing 1/2 PRICE inventory sale on select items.

I guarantee that Stax of Trax will be back in full force in the future. Weekly I’ll try to highlight...

STAX OF TRAX NEW ARRIVALS

Weekly I’ll try to highlight some cool new stock. This week we have:

Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music - beautiful original copy of this Stax style 60’s Soul classic produced by his mentor Otis Redding

Richard Thompson - Henry the Human Fly - Original 1972 copy of Richard’s brilliant and quirky first solo LP recorded after leaving Fairport Convention. 38 years later he’s still at it, as brilliant as ever.

Ray Charles at Newport - Later pressing of this cool live LP recorded at the 1958 Newport Jazz Fest. Incredible cover and yeah that’s Brother Ray playing sax!

Traffic - Mr Fantasy - Beautiful original American copy of this influential 1967 LP that featured a very young Steve Winwood. A fave of Paul Weller’s!

That’s all for this week but much more new stuff in stock.
